Cell Phones Present a Certain Risk to Others

We don't know if you remember the headlines just a few months ago, but another YMCA in South Carolina had a very unfortunate incident occur in its facility. Your safety is of great concern to us and we don't want anything like this to happen to anyone if we can take a few simple steps. Today's cell phones are often equipped with a camera; yet, it is usually difficult to tell from a distance. At an incident at another YMCA locker room an adult had taken pictures of another individual while undressing without that person knowing it.

We also have concerns about how someone could take pictures of members in the Fitness Center and be considered an invasion of privacy.

Because there is just no way to police this or tell from any distance if a cell phone is equipped with a camera, it is for everyone's safety that we ask members to use cell phones ONLY in our hallways or in the lobby. We know that today's society can remain in touch quickly and many times it is necessary to have a cell phone with you while exercising. However, we have phones in our adult locker rooms that you are welcome to use to call out. We are happy to page you to a phone if you were to receive a call at our Front Desk. So please, be considerate and avoid using the cell phone in locker rooms, the Fitness Center, the pool and hot tub and in the gyms. If you must answer a call, please step into a hallway or our lobby.

We have posted this sign around our facility as a reminder.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Associate Executive Director Tom Whortan or CEO Gray Stallworth.
