About the YMCA
The Greenwood Family YMCA is a part of the YMCA movement in the United States. We were founded locally in 1946 and moved into our first facility in 1950. The Y relocated to its present location in 1990.

The mission of the Greenwood Family YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Athletic Achievements
Tom Whortan, YMCA Associate Executive Director, recognized athletes at the YMCA Annual Meeting for outstanding accomplishments during 2008. Many were present and accepted their awards from David Tompkins and Gray Stallworth. The Grapplers Wrestling Team had 10 individual state champions, 2 All-Americans and 1 National Champion. The Flipsters Gymnastics Team had 4 All-Around State Champions, 10 individual event State Champions, 4 competing at the regional championship and 1 gymnast to compete at the national championship. The Gators Swim Team has 13 swimmers qualify for the Upper Southeast Regional Championship, of which 4 participated and 1 swimmer participated in the YMCA National Championship.
Awards
David Tompkins, outgoing president of the YMCA Board, assisted in presenting several awards. The first award went to Lander University and Self Regional Healthcare. Both are founding partners of Activate Greenwood which is in its fourth year of providing the community with a free program designed to build a healthier lifestyle and shed pounds in a healthy and safe manner. Lander President Dan Ball and Self’s CEO Jim Pfieffer accepted the Joab Anderson Community Partner Award. This is the second year of the award which honors Anderson’s love of community and the YMCA.
Ashton Burgess (left) was named the Youth Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding work in the Family Services Department.
William Brown (Right) was named the Outstanding Active Older Adult to recognize his interest and commitment to being active.
