The Greenwood Family YMCA Afterschool program is a fun place to be afterschool with positive staff interaction and learning opportunities. We provide healthy snacks, physical activity time, academic support and a wide variety of other activities, including clubs and time to socialize with friends or play games.
We believe in empowering youth to help design the activities we provide each week. Allowing students to choose what they do each day helps build a student’s understanding of making positive choices and also ensures that all students are participating and engaged in that activity.
The YMCA Afterschool program consists of three key components:
Academic Enrichment: We offer homework time Monday – Thursday. Our program is not a tutoring program. We provide at 30 minutes of focused, quiet time for students to work on homework or other academically-based work. Our staff will do their best to work with the students to help ensure we are a compliment to the work they do in the classroom. Students are responsible for keeping track of their homework each day.
Recreation/Physical Activity: The YMCA has implemented a series of Healthy Eating and Physical Activity standards in our afterschool program as part of the Y’s national commitment to combat childhood obesity and ensure that all those who participate in YMCA programs live a healthier, balanced life. This designated physical activity time allow youth to engage in 30-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day and will take place outdoors whenever possible.
Y-Clubs: All youth should have the opportunity to discover who they are and to express themselves in a fun and safe environment. Y-Club activities allow students an opportunity to participate in specific activities they are interested in, from arts/crafts and STEM projects, to games, service learning and team building.
In order to serve you better the YMCA Afterschool Program has been divided in to three unique divisions. We feel each child will benefit and grow while enrolled in the program specially designed for their age and grade level. In the best interest of each child enrolled in our program all three programs are uniquely designed with activities in the most appropriate settings.
Kid’s Klub (K5 – 3rd Grade) – St. Mark Rivers St Campus
The Kid’s Klub program is designed especially for children K5 through 3rd grade and will operate at the St. Mark Rivers Street Campus (behind the YMCA Gymnastics Center) during afterschool hours. Kid’s Club will offer a daily healthy snack and devotion, character development, and homework time. In addition, your child will choose which extra curricular activity they would like to participate in each day. During prime time as a bonus, “Fun Friday” will allow your child to choose between many fun activities such as: swimming, movie time, sports, games and much more!
Kid’s Kollege (4th – 5th Grade) – YMCA
Graduate on up to the new and improved Kid’s Kollege located at the main campus of the YMCA! This child care program has been developed especially for 4th and 5th graders. Each day Kid’s Kollege will offer a healthy snack, devotion, character development, homework time and an extra curricular activity of the participant’s choice. This dynamic revamped program will utilize the YMCA’s indoor rockwall, basketball gyms and swimming pool each week.
Teen University (6th – 8th Grade) – YMCA
Welcome to YMCA Teen University! This program is for Middle School age youth that will operate during afterschool hours. Teen University offers a healthy snack, devotion, character development, and homework time each day. Your child will be able to participate in organized activities such as sports, game play, and an introduction to youth and government.
